I’m not sharing this because the ethereal light breaking through the dark clouds onto the river feels so hopeful or divine. I’m sharing it because, when a glacier collapse and floods in Tibet and Nepal killed more than a thousand people, the world’s inattention seemed grotesquely out of sync with the photo’s emotional pull—and the realization that climate change can now level mountains.

Petrified

This is a haunting scene from central Nepal, where the hills just beyond the Kathmandu Valley face extinction. Hardened into a gray expanse of mud, rock, and wreckage, the earth looks petrified—as if the violent flood had fossilized the valley. The scene made me think of Pompeii and our own fate, as the climate crisis has rendered this landscape almost indistinguishable from an archaeological ruin.

Center of Gravity

If this were any other president, the astronauts and their mission would be the focus, with the president receding into the background. But with Trump always first in line—the constant focus and object of mirroring—the perceptual dynamics are reversed. Whereas an astronaut and their suit ought to expand the imagination—a human being made newly strange and heroic—these helmets erase identity, and the astronauts seem less like people than mannequins.

Stricken

Set against the cruel beauty of an idyllic landscape, this visceral photo evokes both physical and emotional injury. The boy’s expression makes me ache for our own disorientation—the deadly mix of grief and blindness amid spiraling heat and fire. This gut-punch image could serve as a wrenching poster for climate migration.

For a Moment, at Least

It’s a touching scene in Kyiv, torn apart by drones and missiles. For a moment, the sky is filled only with bubbles.

No Holds Barred

I chose this for how unapologetically graphic it is—in contrast to the far right’s procedural and supposedly bloodless assault on democracy and human rights. Lady Justice has been transformed from a symbol of neutral law into a witness to its capture, holding the scales of justice in her left hand and a cup in her right for protesters to douse her in still more blood. The immediate catalyst for performance artist Samantha Scarcello's protest is the assault on voting and election integrity, which is gaining speed as the midterms draw near.

The Enigma

The Lindsay Clancy story resists comprehension: the alleged acts, the claims of postpartum psychosis, and the question of responsibility. Looking toward her lawyer, Clancy appears both present and unreachable. They say the eyes are a window to the soul. But the power of the photograph lies in what it withholds: a face we instinctively try to read, and cannot.

Images of Distinction

These photos were featured at this summer’s Visa pour l’image 2026: the Perpignan festival of photojournalism.

Great photos recall other vivid imagery in our minds. Because of the structure—you can hardly tell the shimmering sharks are in water—I associated the image with this. And, given their vicious reputation—does that one shark have the other’s head in its mouth?—I thought of this.

The photo’s mutedness is precisely what makes it so striking: a domestic moment in Tehran, softened by pale walls, pale cars, the birds’ balance and peacefulness, and the tree’s surprising contrast. In this image, Iran is not an abstraction, nor merely the object of demonization based on the war with the West or the regime’s actions and targeting. It is also a place of civilian life, layered beauty, and quiet intimacy.

Reading the Mag Covers: Don’t think of a government agency

Would Texas Monthly have chosen this as a cover story if they didn't think the topic and title would earn a double take?

Fauci Tabled

In this sequence, photojournalist Samuel Corum uses visual irony to comment on a coordinated effort to fix the blame for Covid onto Dr. Fauci. At the same time, the images illustrate how spectacle and performance are being used to shift our attention away from the broader lessons of our pandemic response—not to mention, the ongoing hollowing‑out of the systems meant to stop or slow the next outbreak (think: measles, cyclospora, hantavirus, bird flu).

The opening frame all but casts Fauci as a “prince of darkness,” a visual echo of Rand Paul’s campaign to paint him as the architect of U.S.-funded lab experiments in Wuhan and, by extension, as the guy whose choices helped unleash a man‑made pandemic on the world.

The second and third images, posted side-by-side in Corum’s Instagram feed and capturing opposite sides of the same table, play as a split‑screen of respectability and rough play—on the surface, a formal hearing; just beneath it, the under‑the‑table or, below‑the‑belt theatrics of trying to make Fauci the fall guy for the whole pandemic.

And then there’s the frame, echoing the first, that seems to mutate Fauci into a cyborg, a pirate, or just the straw man for a hyper‑polarized hearing flirting with its own blindness.

Reading the Illos

In this illustration by Anna Mallina for NYT Opinion, the face of Odysseus is absent, an empty screen for an essay's argument. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is stacked with A-list masculinity — an inescapable Matt Damon chief among them — which makes the defacement all the more radical. The void reads as a gender commentary in its own right, with Odysseus pressed into service as a modern projection that inadvertently exposes the heroic fault lines in men and the male leader.

The dimensions of the climate crisis this summer are so extreme that it’s hard to wrap one’s head around it. That's why this somewhat oblique-looking image works on multiple levels. Sure, yes, it's an aerial photograph. But amid record-breaking heat across Europe, it also looks like an infographic.

Reading the Titles

The anchor text of a newly published NYT Investigation into the reflecting pool controversy offers its own nod to visual analysis: the idea that a single image can hold up a mirror to a much larger story.

Painterly in its wide, sweeping composition yet raw as a blast crater, Salwan Georges's lede photo dwarfs its two ant-sized inspectors against the drained basin — a visual echo of the piece's mirror metaphor capturing the sheer scope of remediating the fallout of Trump 47.

History Restaged

The maroon “WAR” banner hanging over the entrance to this exhibit is the tell. Its blocky, retro-serif font and gold trim evoke the visual style of a carnival sideshow or vintage circus tent rather than a serious acknowledgment of American conflict. The people in the scene reinforce the dissonance: a family in red, white, and blue leis and flag-patterned totes, a small group of visitors trickling through what should be a major attraction.

The Great American State Fair on the National Mall was organized by the Trump-aligned group Freedom 250 as a rival to the official, bipartisan America 250 commission — an airbrushed alternative history akin to Trump’s censorship at the Smithsonian. But scattered crowds, heat-related closures, and skepticism about attendance claims suggest the effort to shape the milestone in MAGA’s image cost the country something more valuable: a genuinely powerful, collective experience around its 250th birthday.

One Love

These images are from a New York Times editorial by Rachel Reyes. In 2025, an ICE agent fatally shot her son, Ruben Ray Martinez, in Texas. He was 23, unarmed, a U.S. citizen—by all accounts, a kind and gentle young man. He was shot at point-blank range after being pulled from his car.

The photos vividly portray Ruben’s character.

Banksy’s new statue in Waterloo Place, London, arrives at exactly the right moment. A suited figure marches forward, the flag extended over its face — doing double duty as both a blindfold and a hood. Individuality erased, all that remains is a posture of loyal forward motion and a flag that functions as both cover and weapon.

Trump insists that the Iran War keeps Americans safer at home. The picture says otherwise.

Last week outside Gracie Mansion, Emir Balat, an 18‑year‑old Turkish American now charged in federal court as an alleged ISIS‑inspired attacker, hurled this homemade explosive toward police during a March 7 rally organized by far‑right influencer Jake Lang to protest Muslim public prayer.

The confrontation reveals how Trump’s securitized politics and the post–Iraq War climate of suspicion have spilled over from distant battlefields onto American streets. All that imported warfare boils down to a single gesture: Balat’s hand gripping the taped-up explosive, with the fuse already burning.

Cartoonists, Save Us

The Iran War, Drawn in the Margins

In this not-normal, parallel universe, photojournalists—and just as much, if not more, the cartoonists—are the most straightforward storytellers we have. This cover reduces Trump’s Insta-war to a game he believes he can rearrange at will: disconnect here, flip a switch there, walk away from the chaos.

They Think We’re That Blind

You know I’m taken with those New York Times “Opinion posters.” This one resonates with Toro’s cartoon. The message is blunt—there is always something to see, especially when power claims there isn’t.

Everything He Touches

“Trump Will Destroy Washington if It’s the Last Thing He Does” is mainly about the illegal demolition of the East Wing and the fantasy White House ballroom. But the bigger picture is that his Midas touch reduces everything and everyone—save for himself and his fellow grifters—to rubble. While Iran might be the headline, the damage spreads through every institution he touches.

Eco Disaster, By Design

Trump and Netanyahu aren’t just bombing distant oil fields. They’re attacking locations in and around Tehran, poisoning the air and the people forced to breathe it. The strikes turn fuel depots into sources of toxic weather—acid rain, lingering smoke, long‑term health risks—while the president continues to urge them to ‘step up.

Walking the Wing

Posted in multiple ‘photo of the week’ galleries, it reads like a challenge. Against that peaceful, almost pastoral backdrop, the airman is walking the plank—only the plank is a bomber wing. It hints at a war without a plan, escalation as muscle memory.

A Perfect Photo for the Age of Resistance

This scene dominated the news cycle due to the breach of protocol—the hat worn at a transfer ceremony for soldiers killed in this war. But this image by Julia Nikhinson goes layers deeper. The hat alone carries heavy symbolism—“USA,” stamped with 45–47, collapsing Trump’s two terms into a single project and folding the country into himself.

Then there are his eyes.​

Closed, they can appear prayerful, holding a sense of sanctity in the weight of the moment. But they also reflect what we’ve observed for years: a man blind to his own responsibility for this war, of the fate of the troops, and of the consequences that follow from his actions. The photograph captures both readings at once and leaves the judgment to us.

On the Home Front

Gestures on the Economy

This photo, along with the one below, are White House photographs, folks. The hokey dance looks like flailing, with everything else falling apart. For an image promoting tariff magic and spiking gas prices to a worried country, it’s telling there isn’t another American in sight.

Hectorer-in-Chief.

The “Welcome, Mr.. President” banner stretches over a crowd waiting and waiting. In their posture and the tension in their bodies, the phrase becomes both a question and a demand. They’re not just waiting for dear leader; they’re waiting for results.

Measles Crisis Still Raging in the Dark

Do you remember my July post contrasting the tragic photo a vaccine-denying mother took of her suffering children with the empty propaganda of JFK, Jr., and the mindless stock images that illustrate countless health stories?

Eight months later, we’re facing a real crisis. The country is close to losing its measles-free status, as defined by the World Health Organization. Still, stock photos of microscopic viruses and close-ups of vials and syringes continue to dominate.

But look a little further, and the images grow darker.

There is an increasing number of photos like this: PPE-clad healthcare workers making home visits, working from pop-up clinics, conducting exposure assessments, and administering vaccinations linked to school outbreaks.

Makayla lies unconscious, but the tattooed eyes on the arm gripping her hand stare straight at us, refusing to let us see a softened version of this outbreak. In my earlier measles post, I argued that images of real families in crisis are almost entirely absent from coverage, even as Trump’s HHS and RFK Jr. flood the zone with photo ops, sympathy tours, and vaccine “both‑sidesing” to minimize the damage of their own anti‑vax crusade. This frame joins those two tracks: a child bearing the burden of disinformation, and an accusatory gaze that pierces through the plywood signs, syringe stock shots, and carefully staged scenes meant to hide how serious things really are.
