Immigration War

A pregnant 22-year-old asylum seeker from El Salvador surrendered herself at the border, claiming she was fleeing threats to her life. When she told agents about her brother being killed and expressed fear for her safety, they laughed, dismissing her story as one they hear often. As she fell ill and started bleeding, they offered no medical help. Six days into her detention at Otay Mesa, she lost her baby.

The photo is part of Greg Constantine’s 7 Doors Immigration Detention project. His work, An American Gulag, maps the U.S. detention system — an expanding network of prison-like facilities, state prisons, and county jails.

The image hides her identity while highlighting her invisibility. What remains is a so-called “bracelet” — or, more accurately, a shackle, a leash. And those Chucks —scuffed black-and-white, the shoes of punk rebellion, of freedom, of refusal —contradict the monitor completely.

Iran War

Don’t get me started on the military sourcing photos to news agencies. This one — with its body language, its flexible posture — is the perfect example. As Fareed Zakaria puts it:

“For the world, there is no longer any such thing as American credibility, just a strange reality television show in which the main actor swerves, bobs, and weaves his way through crises, hoping that what he says today will solve the crisis caused by what he said yesterday.”

As Trump’s off-ramps for exiting Iran close, it’s in his interest for the war to fade into ambience.

Yes, Trump got the downed airman back. But the loss of the fighter plane shot down by Iran foiled Trump’s latest war escape plan. Which, according to New York Mag, is to simply ignore it.

Iran has other ideas.

The billboard is perfect — a public taunt of ensnared American aircraft, not just for the whole city to walk past, but a hook so vivid it won the lede on the New York Times front page. That’s not just propaganda. It’s Iran demonstrating exactly how to get under Trump’s skin. Make him the spectacle. Even a paper cut, properly magnified, is enough to keep him entangled.

War on Cuba

Wars are not just about countries. Natalie Keyssar’s photographs from this Cuba update are a love letter to the people of the embattled island—a deliberate pairing of two worlds. On one side, ordinary moments: a vendor holding out a chick for sale. On the other, the ruins of infrastructure, the visible signs of economic devastation.

Gender War

Martin Cherry shot from above, and the angle is the whole argument.

Heather Mae was removed for singing. Those wide-brimmed hats — six of them, closing in — read less like law enforcement than alien bots asserting control. She’s the only human face in the frame, the only color. This is manhandling, in every sense — a fitting image for the state of gender freedom and bodily autonomy in the same week the Supreme Court struck down Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy.

War on Climate

Trump and his EPA have made fossil fuels great again — and policy, propaganda, and his genius for distraction have all but vanquished concern for the climate emergency. Inattention is no excuse. From the melting ice caps to the environmental wreckage of the Iran War to last month’s heat wave in the Western U.S. — temperatures not 5-10 but an astonishing 30-40 degrees above normal — the disaster is escalating on every front. Bartkowski’s photo renders Angelenos as shadow creatures, huddled under umbrellas in a city once synonymous with sun. The guy in full sun looks like he’s regretting his choices.

Dear Leader

When I first saw this photo of Trump with the woman’s face obscured by the press mic, it reminded me of so many Epstein committee photographs with young women’s faces redacted. Then he fired Pam Bondi — his hyper-loyal Attorney General — not for disloyalty, but reportedly for failing to make Trump’s own Epstein connections disappear. Erasure is at the heart of this presidency. And I’m pretty sure she is the person who’s been erased here.

Doug Mills caught Trump in full oracle mode — the all-knowing president who couldn’t imagine this war going wrong, when everyone who studies Iran already knew all the ways it could.

...Or, maybe that’s just Teflon exploding.

Trump insists that the Iran War keeps Americans safer at home. The picture says otherwise.

Last week outside Gracie Mansion, Emir Balat, an 18‑year‑old Turkish American now charged in federal court as an alleged ISIS‑inspired attacker, hurled this homemade explosive toward police during a March 7 rally organized by far‑right influencer Jake Lang to protest Muslim public prayer.

The confrontation reveals how Trump’s securitized politics and the post–Iraq War climate of suspicion have spilled over from distant battlefields onto American streets. All that imported warfare boils down to a single gesture: Balat’s hand gripping the taped-up explosive, with the fuse already burning.

The Iran War, Drawn in the Margins

In this not-normal, parallel universe, photojournalists—and just as much, if not more, the cartoonists—are the most straightforward storytellers we have. This cover reduces Trump’s Insta-war to a game he believes he can rearrange at will: disconnect here, flip a switch there, walk away from the chaos.

You know I’m taken with those New York Times “Opinion posters.” This one resonates with Toro’s cartoon. The message is blunt—there is always something to see, especially when power claims there isn’t.

Everything He Touches

“Trump Will Destroy Washington if It’s the Last Thing He Does” is mainly about the illegal demolition of the East Wing and the fantasy White House ballroom. But the bigger picture is that his Midas touch reduces everything and everyone—save for himself and his fellow grifters—to rubble. While Iran might be the headline, the damage spreads through every institution he touches.

Eco Disaster, By Design

Trump and Netanyahu aren’t just bombing distant oil fields. They’re attacking locations in and around Tehran, poisoning the air and the people forced to breathe it. The strikes turn fuel depots into sources of toxic weather—acid rain, lingering smoke, long‑term health risks—while the president continues to urge them to ‘step up.

Walking the Wing

Posted in multiple ‘photo of the week’ galleries, it reads like a challenge. Against that peaceful, almost pastoral backdrop, the airman is walking the plank—only the plank is a bomber wing. It hints at a war without a plan, escalation as muscle memory.

A Perfect Photo for the Age of Resistance

This scene dominated the news cycle due to the breach of protocol—the hat worn at a transfer ceremony for soldiers killed in this war. But this image by Julia Nikhinson goes layers deeper. The hat alone carries heavy symbolism—“USA,” stamped with 45–47, collapsing Trump’s two terms into a single project and folding the country into himself.

Then there are his eyes.​

Closed, they can appear prayerful, holding a sense of sanctity in the weight of the moment. But they also reflect what we’ve observed for years: a man blind to his own responsibility for this war, of the fate of the troops, and of the consequences that follow from his actions. The photograph captures both readings at once and leaves the judgment to us.

On the Home Front

Gestures on the Economy

This photo, along with the one below, are White House photographs, folks. The hokey dance looks like flailing, with everything else falling apart. For an image promoting tariff magic and spiking gas prices to a worried country, it’s telling there isn’t another American in sight.

The “Welcome, Mr.. President” banner stretches over a crowd waiting and waiting. In their posture and the tension in their bodies, the phrase becomes both a question and a demand. They’re not just waiting for dear leader; they’re waiting for results.

Measles Crisis Still Raging in the Dark

Do you remember my July post contrasting the tragic photo a vaccine-denying mother took of her suffering children with the empty propaganda of JFK, Jr., and the mindless stock images that illustrate countless health stories?

Eight months later, we’re facing a real crisis. The country is close to losing its measles-free status, as defined by the World Health Organization. Still, stock photos of microscopic viruses and close-ups of vials and syringes continue to dominate.

But look a little further, and the images grow darker.

There is an increasing number of photos like this: PPE-clad healthcare workers making home visits, working from pop-up clinics, conducting exposure assessments, and administering vaccinations linked to school outbreaks.

Makayla lies unconscious, but the tattooed eyes on the arm gripping her hand stare straight at us, refusing to let us see a softened version of this outbreak. In my earlier measles post, I argued that images of real families in crisis are almost entirely absent from coverage, even as Trump’s HHS and RFK Jr. flood the zone with photo ops, sympathy tours, and vaccine “both‑sidesing” to minimize the damage of their own anti‑vax crusade. This frame joins those two tracks: a child bearing the burden of disinformation, and an accusatory gaze that pierces through the plywood signs, syringe stock shots, and carefully staged scenes meant to hide how serious things really are.

I’ve admired how The New York Times Opinion section collaborates with its photo, graphics, and design teams to pair bold visuals with its essays. The titles and images together have always felt like political posters to me.

I’ve compiled a collection of them dealing with Trump and the Iran War from its beginning, just over a week ago. They show a shift from spectacle to fallout, from Trump’s illusion of control and quick victory to the rising political, economic, and moral risks. They also mirror an editorial and national mood that quickly shifted from shock to skepticism. These are my takes. I welcome yours in the comments.

The one above features a fighter jet casting a shadow over a literal poster. At ground level, it depicts Trump’s Iran War as a bombing run over the once-isolationist, now “up in arms” MAGA movement.

The Times employs a similar double‑exposure approach across three articles—“The President of War,” “Trump May Come to Regret This,” and “Trump’s Fantasy Is Crashing Down”—but the meaning changes considerably over the eight days.

Initially, haze and stage lighting help portray Trump as a ceremonial war president, draped in flags, with the presidential seal on the lectern and a ghosted emblem behind him, echoing how past presidents have used the symbols of office to address clear and present threats. However, these same symbols are used to promote a war that is much more discretionary.

In the second, a fighter jet on the carrier deck is superimposed with what appears to be bombed-out targets on the ground, collapsing the gap between launch and impact and making the promise of power inseparable from destruction, which is exactly what the “regret” headline warns may return to him.

By the third, the podium and much of his head disappear, and his torso becomes a surface for rockets and smoke, making Trump and the war effort indistinguishable. The missile that seems to streak toward his head suggests he’s bringing danger down on himself as much as on the country, for once.

The red filtering turns the Capitol dome from a beacon into a siren, signaling the dangerous economic and physical aftermath of Trump’s war objectives. It’s also like a warning flare over Congress, the body that waved Trump through on his war‑making and now faces its own glaring abdication to answer for. As much as Trump claims to serve the nation’s interests, observe how the flag is also washed out in a sea of red.

Lessons from history for an administration that isn’t listening. The photo-illustration layers Iran’s clerical leaders, portraits that point back to the 1953 CIA‑backed coup and forward to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. It also includes echoes of Saddam’s statue coming down in Baghdad’s Firdos Square in 2003 and Cold War fallout, like the Stalin statue toppled in Budapest during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. This aligns Trump’s Iran gamble with a long record of Western regime‑change hubris and lessons he seems determined not to learn.

Maybe his crown hasn’t gotten any smaller; it’s Trump’s head that has exploded, which is quite something for a guy known for chickening out when he's pushed too far. However, here, the shrunken crown on that swollen silhouette suggests that the narcissism of the “Teflon king” has finally overtaken him because instead of walking away from a war that's already going south and risking the GOP’s midterms, he’s digging in even more.

Ow, what a double‑entendre! “Nothing to see here” fits the hyper-aggressive and hopelessly unqualified Defense Secretary insisting the Iran war is cut and dry, but it just as easily reads as “nobody to see here.” By the way, Hegseth insists on being called the Secretary of War, but nobody in the administration wants to use the same term for the “operation” in Iran.

The flag as a drape, akin to a cleric’s robe, is also a nice touch.

The angel symbol is perfect if you’re talking about Trump’s MAGA fall from grace, and it also works as an Icarus riff—extreme hubris, ignoring every warning.

Duty to Americans? Trump? The White House’s neglect in evacuating stranded Americans was just the tip of the iceberg, considering the oil shocks and shipping chaos, rising threats of retaliation, billions yanked from schools and health care for even more weapons, and more excuses for spying and crackdowns at home.

I just hope that coughing kid doesn’t have measles.

Practically speaking, the war went live before the speech was even over. Within four days of Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, American jets were in the air striking Iran, a mission ordered in secret, without a public case, and without the constitutional consideration and approval the speech is supposed to support.

If you were watching from the House gallery or on television, though, you didn’t see a president leveling with the country about a looming war. You saw a showman surrounded by medals, war heroes, and hand-picked victims, staging a prime-time commercial for American force while burying the real operation off-stage.

That was the organizing lie of this State of the Union: Trump used the night to wrap himself in the symbols and stories of war — its hardware, its sacrifice, its glory — everywhere except where the law and the Constitution actually require it. In the longest presidential address in history — nearly two hours — he mentioned Iran for barely a few minutes and never laid out objectives, risks, or a rationale for what was already in motion.

But for all of Trump's dominance that night, the most telling image was Pete Hegseth showing off a toy Blue Angels fighter jet as he entered the chamber. The man in charge of the Pentagon appeared less like a sober guardian of the country’s defenses and more like a kid unable to hide his excitement for the coming firestorm.

General Dan Caine, the Joint Chiefs chairman, was considerably less ebullient. Reporting would later describe him as privately uneasy about the risks of a wider conflict, warning that any move without a clear strategy could spiral into chaos.

Here we see Caine and Senator Chris Coons, a ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, bent toward each other before the speech began — the photograph now reads less as small talk than as a pre-reckoning. Coons would later call the Iran strike "an illegal war launched without meaningful consultation or consent of Congress.”

Inside the speech itself, war largely appeared as a backdrop for honor and uplift, and the pictures echo the heavy-handed irony. Each image is genuinely moving — and taken together, they turn military service into emotional scaffolding for a conflict the president refused to name.

There was Marine Corporal Kenton Slover, standing at attention as he was praised for his valor; retired Navy pilot Royce Williams, saluted as a living legend from another era; Army veteran Shane Taggart, hand over heart in a tight salute, and Coast Guard Petty Officer, honored for rescuing people from deadly flooding.

But the camera didn’t just linger on the people Trump chooses to honor. It kept finding the people and abuses that his politics have helped to produce. In the same chamber where he wrapped himself in other people’s wars, the images also registered the wars he is waging at home: on women and survivors of sexual abuse, on migrants and their families, on people of color, on dissent itself.

The Epstein scandal had been breaking open in the weeks before the speech, with politicians, executives, and public figures around the globe losing their positions as the files and the names kept surfacing. The one place the reckoning had conspicuously stalled was here at home. The survivors in the gallery represent that stall. And within ninety-six hours of the speech, the Iran strikes gave the press and the public something else entirely to fill the zone — one of the more consequential deployments of that trick in the Trump era, given everything else that was buried. The faces in this photograph know exactly how the trick works.

Aliya Rahman, a guest of Rep. Ilhan Omar, was grabbed and led away by multiple Capitol Police officers after she briefly stood up silently in the gallery — no signs, no chanting — even as people around her were also on their feet and news outlets documented nearby guests standing and applauding while officers focused on her alone. Rahman is an autistic, disabled U.S. citizen with a preexisting traumatic brain injury. In January, ICE agents in Minneapolis had shattered her car window, cut her seatbelt, dragged her from the vehicle, slammed her face down, carried her by her arms and legs, and prevented her from reaching a scheduled brain-injury appointment.

Rahman had warned the officers about her injuries before they hauled her out anyway; she was taken to George Washington University Hospital and later booked.

Representative Green was also ejected from the previous year’s SOTU for protesting — and the press and the GOP spent more time amplifying his breach of decorum than the what or the why. The fact that he was largely ignored this time is arguably worse.

This is what erasure actually looks like. Not a confrontation, not a reckoning — just a room so thick with the preferred version of itself that dissent becomes invisible. In any other era, Trump's racial slur targeting the Obamas — posted on his own social media platform — would have consumed the country. Here, the invisibility of the words on a handwritten sign is nothing if not a testament to the depth of Trump's authoritarianism and the grip of white nationalism.

What makes the photograph devastating is the compression. Green is literally sandwiched — Trump and his escort in front, a solid bank of white shirts and red ties behind, and to the side. The man directly above him wears a MAGA hat into the chamber, his own act of demonstration, unremarked upon and unpenalized. And on the far right of Green, nearly swallowed by the same crowd, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, in the pink of the Democratic Women's Caucus — also barely visible, barely registered.

But what makes the photograph just as cutting is the room's collective affect — laughter, bonhomie, performative celebration. The levity of the men in their uniform white shirts and red ties, the glee of the pols most accentuated just off Trump's shoulder — all of it in tension with the deep disaffection on Green's face and Wasserman Schultz's, absorbed without a ripple.

The same logic that rendered Green invisible is encoded in the photographs themselves — except in these, it's made official.

Rep. Troy Nehls (yes, the same congressman who moments earlier had tried to rip Rep. Green's banner from his hands) wore a tie printed with portraits of Trump against an American flag — an act of idolatry so complete it doubled as a prop.

The exchange lasted seconds. The appetite it reveals ran through the whole evening.

One wire photograph places Trump alongside the Supreme Court justices and the Joint Chiefs — a formal picture that still gestures toward the constitutional order: the judiciary, the legislature, the executive, the military, all in one frame.

But the White House released its own version of the same moment, and in that image, Trump is the only figure in sharp focus. The justices, who represent the independent legal check his administration has repeatedly tried to sidestep, are soft shapes at the margins. So are the generals.

That second blur matters on its own terms. Trump and Hegseth showed little patience for the kind of careful, layered military counsel that complicates a clean decision. The blurred Joint Chiefs in the White House photograph are a visual echo of that: the serious concerns, the professional caution, the institutional knowledge that might slow things down — all rendered indistinct, pushed to the edge of the frame where they can confer gravity without interfering with the image Trump wants to project.

That is the organizing logic of the whole evening — and, it turns out, of the Iran attack that followed. Pull the useful symbols forward. Blur whatever complicates the picture. And keep the actual decision, the one that required a declaration and a reckoning with the Constitution, carefully out of focus until the bombs were already in the air.

Leila Navidi’s photograph for the Minneapolis Star Tribune shows St. Paul neighbors on a Cathedral Hill sidewalk on February 11, 2026, standing shoulder to shoulder with their phones raised as militarized ICE agents turn away.

What began as a spontaneous response to a high‑speed crash caused by an ICE chase becomes, in her frame, a rare picture of collective solidarity—everyday residents forming a united front, documenting federal power, and quietly claiming the moral ground.

While the image went viral, little was written about why it had such an impact. In our latest Chatting the Pictures video, we read it detail by detail, to show how its composition, timing, and gestures have made it a breakthrough resistance picture for this state and this moment. Watch now:

The events that built this picture

What follows are “companion images” that show how the Twin Cities had been visually building toward that moment, and how much Navidi’s photograph carries in a single frame.

Patriotism

The flag that once staged official power becomes a neighborhood standard here—an early glimpse of the homegrown patriotism that will crest in Navidi’s frame, when residents claim the street as theirs.

Solidarity

Residents pack a school auditorium as a community organizer walks them through the federal crackdown and ICE raids in Minneapolis, one of many neighborhood meetings that sprang up to understand the violence and plan a collective response.

These rooms and streets are the scaffolding beneath Navidi’s stand‑off: a city that has already been meeting, learning, and shivering together, so that when ICE rolls in again, neighbors know instinctively how to show up with their bodies and their phones.

Doggedness

By the time we reach Navidi’s picture, that ethic of systematically following and filming has moved from lone individuals and resistance networks to a whole block of neighbors, turning pursuit into a spontaneous neighborhood reflex.

Key Icons

In Navidi’s photo, that commitment condenses into objects. At the far left, a woman stands with a phone in one hand and a whistle in the other, her body oriented toward the agents.

Closer to the center of Navidi’s frame, an agent’s chemical spray rides in his shirt pocket; to the right, a woman in a brown coat grips a water bottle, ready to flush someone’s eyes if that spray is used. The picture quietly pits weapon against antidote—state chemical agents against neighborhood first aid—turning domestic items into icons of everyday defense.

Journalists Represent

Here the journalist is not just a byline but a protagonist, part of the visible frontline. In Navidi’s picture, that role doubles: Sam Stroozas, the MPR reporter anchoring the frame in her bathrobe and slippers, and Leila Navidi, the Star Tribune photographer behind the camera, are witnesses of the witnesses, documenting a citizenry that has turned its cameras—and its attention—back on the state.

Minnesota Strong

Across Minneapolis, scenes like this show neighbors tending to one another in public space, reinforcing that resistance is also mutual care—rides, food, warmth, information. This is a city that learned, brutally and publicly, how to face federal force during the George Floyd uprising, and the administration misreads that history if it thinks Minneapolis will meet an ICE occupation with fear instead of practiced solidarity.

Navidi’s frame condenses that experience into a single confrontation on a residential street, where everyone is someone’s backup and no one stands alone.

The Economist’s cover turns that abstraction into contact: a hand not just on but bearing down on the camera, but each fingertip a pressure point you can almost feel. The hand sits between us and whatever the lens might see, a neat stand‑in for the way power now treats journalism—as something to smother, not to answer.

And in a week when the Washington Post took a hacksaw to the newsroom, including the entire Pulitzer-prize-winning photography department, the image doubles as a grim business plan. If you can’t quite kill the press, you can starve the pictures.

Gotcha

Tulsi Gabbard stands in Fulton County’s election hub as Director of National Intelligence, turning up at an FBI search of a county election office tied to Trump’s long‑debunked 2020 fraud claims—a presence that blurs the line between her actual job, which is foreign spycraft, and local election policing in the name of chasing yet more phantom fraud. It’s an extraordinary show of top‑down muscle in a place that’s already been ground zero for efforts to discredit the vote.

The picture itself is fittingly grainy and low‑lit, with Gabbard dressed in black and half-swallowed by sheet metal, like a confederate lookout caught on a surveillance camera. The image feels like the boiler room where misdeeds get routed and laundered, with Gabbard as Trump’s war‑on‑democracy Rosie the Riveter.

Epstein Fallout: Horse of a Different Color

“Back in the saddle,” yes—but also on the most impossible horse you’ve ever seen.

For a split second, the tree splices the two animals into one creature, a dark, compact body with a pale, accordion‑like neck stretching out from behind the trunk. That visual glitch becomes a deadpan metaphor for Andrew’s split existence: the solid, recognizable shell of the country gentleman plodding on in Windsor Great Park, and a second, ghostlier self jutting in from the margins just as new Epstein files re‑locate him having his way with young girls at the nearby Royal Lodge.

Domestic Terror

A man lunges at Ilhan Omar with a syringe, his face twisted like a Goya figure, and the shot freezes the whole chain of custody of American political violence in mid‑air. The syringe becomes a weapon, Omar’s body the target, and the crowd’s shock the atmosphere that now attends a routine town hall. Trump’s response—that she “probably had herself sprayed”—folds the attack into his ongoing loyalty test, where a congresswoman under physical assault is less a victim than a prop in the performance of grievance.

The Erasures

One war clears land, the other kills the lights, and in both Gaza and Ukraine, whole populations are treated as expendable infrastructure—something to be emptied, darkened, and written off when the plans are done.

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl set features a plantation‑like field of cane and brush. This halftime spectacle drags the Caribbean’s history of chattel slavery and U.S. colonialism onto the largest sporting stage—the grasses carrying their own code—Puerto Rican and Latin American landscapes, Florida detention camps. The gesticulating figures surround a work vehicle, even echoing migrant workers hunted by ICE. So the show reads as both a pop triumph and a land memory, a performance built on ground that won’t stop talking.

It’s a quiet refusal of the usual Olympic neutrality: if you want the spectacle, you have to look the dead in the eye on the way down the run—and this week, he was disqualified for keeping faith with them.

A federal agent is firing tear gas into a crowd. The visual grammar is combat: obscured sightlines, tactical aggression in urban terrain, and chemical weapons deployed against civilians. The fog—literal and figurative—shrouds what’s happening in the language of war. You could be looking at Gaza, Fallujah, or any number of conflict zones. Except this is Minneapolis.

The term “war,” as applied to the mission of Trump’s Homeland Security agency, remains overwhelmingly understood by politicians and journalists alike as hyperbole, as metaphor. Just like people mocked or shrugged when the Pentagon renamed itself “the Department of War.” But the depictions from Minnesota express exactly what the semantics indicate: in language, verbal as well as visual, it is what it says.

The artists Shoshibuya gets it. His latest interpretation of a New York Times Opinion page not only captures the smoke from the attack on Minneapolis, the blotches of paint like shrapnel, but he “publishes” the words the media, like The Times, will not use.

Not just a war, but a civil war.

This gray, primal photo by David Butow primes the comparison.

The composition of civilians watching federal forces at a fortified position, with the flag as the focal point, evokes the April 12-13, 1861, attack on Fort Sumter. The flag held by protesters facing federal agents marks the same contested sovereignty. That residents in Charleston expected a show echoes the same underestimation. Then as now—with the future of democracy on the line in Trump’s purge of immigration and First Amendment rights —‘war’ isn’t a flourish or a figure of speech. That’s what the pictures show.

Ultimately, the sight of federal agents armed to the teeth says everything before anyone moves. This isn’t crowd control. It’s insurgency.

The Fronts

War doesn’t move in a straight line. In Minneapolis, it’s advancing on at least three fronts.

The Civic Front

Most images from Minneapolis catch isolated incidents—a single raid, a single clash with protesters, a single breached doorway. Phones record what’s right in front of them. This one does something else: it shows scale.

That’s why Tim Evans’ photograph traveled so widely. It’s one of the few pictures that makes visible what people only hold in their heads: this isn’t discrete law enforcement. It’s sustained territorial operations. Once you lock onto that, the burning columns stop reading as just a few fires; they become location markers, cries, and statements of resistance all at once.

The Removal Front

Philip Montgomery’s photograph captures an ambient terror spreading far beyond the streets where the agents actually operate. A person stands at the window, caught between private and public, safety and threat. Her gaze aligns with the camera, not on any federal presence off‑frame.

The window frame matters. In war photography, windows and doors often mark vulnerability—the moment before breach, the boundary that won’t hold. Montgomery places the figure squarely inside that frame, making the psychological operation legible even when no agents appear in the shot.

This is what systematic removal looks like at the domestic scale: uncertainty as a weapon. You don’t know when they’re coming. You don’t know if you’re next. The terror runs 24/7, even when enforcement is sporadic. That’s the design.

The assault on Teyana Gibson Brown’s home is tactically identical to home invasions I documented during U.S. raids in Fallujah in 2004 and 2005: door-breaching, tactical stacks, overwhelming force against civilian residences. A New York Times video breaks down the equipment—silencers, MAWLs, M-LOKs—gear militarized since the Gulf War, standard SWAT issue, now deployed for immigration enforcement.

But the precise historical parallel comes from wars explicitly understood as systematic removal operations: Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda. In Bosnia (1992-1995), Serbian forces carried out house-to-house operations, forced displacement, terrorizing families. In Kosovo (1999), a centrally organized campaign to clear regions of ethnic Albanians.” In Rwanda (1994), door-to-door searches created pervasive fear.

What’s happening in Minneapolis fits this pattern. Sporadic raids, battering rams at dawn, the uncertainty of who is next—systematic removal carried out as a police operation, incident by incident, house by house.

The Press Front

Photographers aren’t documenting this war from the sidelines—they’re targets. John Abernathy’s camera is mid-flight as federal agents tackle him, in a frame Pierre Lavie shot to preserve his images. Lavie later described reaching for Abernathy’s phone as a federal officer repeatedly tried to stomp on it—”I had to Hungry Hippo my hand in and out to avoid my hand getting stepped on,” he said.

The pattern is systematic: Jon Farina shot with crowd-control munitions; Zach Roberts struck in the head; Nick Valenciatear-gassed and shoved—all wearing press credentials. You can’t assault every citizen with a camera. But you can send a message by assaulting those who represent the fourth estate.

Photos Deeper Than the Denial

Photojournalists are not just recording the rituals of battle. In a highly charged, increasingly authoritarian political climate, they are tuned to the atmosphere around those rituals—the nuances, ironies, and visual echoes of other wars that emerge from contested narratives and propaganda. Their photographs register not only the clashes themselves but also the ways in which a society is gaslit into thinking it’s no war at all.

Given the circumstances, the many conflict- and terror-associated connotations in Mostafa Bassim’s image are not unreasonable. They converge in a single phrase: the fog of war. The shroud of the gas and the body language of the citizen at the far right remind me of Lower Manhattan during the fall of the World Trade Center. In the street, the trees, and the body language, a few might even see hints of The Napalm Girl. At the same time, the fog itself reflects the ambiguity of language—the way it obscures any attempt to call the siege in Minnesota exactly what it is.

The canister suspended in the air—mid‑arc, mid‑detonation. The documentary distance lets us study the moment almost clinically. That clarity cuts against the chaos the violence intends. The shock and awe, the ‘flooding the zone,’ are designed to traumatize—to make thinking impossible. The freeze-frame, instead, lets us process the fireworks rather than absorb their impact. It’s a portrait that says to Trump, Miller, and Noem: we get what you’re about.

Talk about a photo that goes the other way. The vulnerability in this agent’s body. The fear in his eyes. The sheerness of the mask, more like lingerie. Where the troops are largely untrained, barely managed, and operating with little plan, many of them are simply scared to death. Undermining the sense that Trump’s enforcers are all attack dogs and soldier‑of‑fortune types, this image captures a deeper truth: they—like the citizens hunted at their car doors—are equally caught in the crossfire.

Minneapolis: Escalation and Grief

I’m working on a longer post on the new civil war. In the meantime, let me share.

Evidence of escalation as much as brutality, this photo—featured on the front page of the Minnesota Star Tribune—was taken three days before federal agents killed Alex Pretti. After an ICE agent shoved a cyclist, a crowd of bystanders and protesters surged forward, shouting at the agents, who responded by tackling demonstrators to the pavement and spraying this man point-blank with a chemical irritant.

More than any photo I’ve seen, this captures the political intent and psychic drive behind the Trump administration’s war on sanctuary cities: domestic terror and pure sadism.

Evelyn Hockstein’s photo lays bare Minnesota’s grief over the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and the violent occupation of their city. The mascara running down her face makes the heartbreak unbearably immediate, while those heart-shaped glasses, the peace-and-love aesthetic straight out of the ‘60s, connect this moment of anguish to another generation’s resistance to war and state violence.

Denmark, Greenland, and the Mockery that is White House Media

Hillary Swift’s portraits from Copenhagen are everything the White House’s AI garbage isn’t: human, dignified, real. Swift captures the faces of Danes—veterans, artists, ordinary citizens—grappling with Trump’s threats to seize Greenland. You see their shock, their resolve, the weight of betrayal by a supposed ally.

Then look at what the White House posted from Davos: AI-generated caricatures that turn the crisis, Trump’s gaslighting and threats, into propaganda poster kitsch. It’s contempt on every level—for the Danes and the Greenlanders whose sovereignty hangs in the balance, for the notion that foreign policy deserves anything more than comic book panels and burlesque, and for visual communication itself.

Warming Overhead

Water rises ankle‑deep inside a room that already looks half‑submerged in paint, the blue strokes on the walls reading now as tides and currents instead of decoration. The window is jammed with plastic chairs, absurdly suspended between inside and out, like improvised floodgates. Even the mosquito net, bundled uselessly high on the wall, reads as a white flag; the tools people once used to manage their environment are no match for an atmosphere that has slipped its bounds.

I don’t entirely grasp the physics in this frame either, but I recognize the politics: this warped little room in the global South is what it looks like when Trump yanks the U.S. out of climate pacts while fantasizing about strip‑mining a thawing Arctic and carving up Greenland. Do you think he’d have such designs on that ice if the shrinking polar caps weren’t opening new seams for mining and shipping, the same effect that is now supercharging the brutal snow and ice gripping half the country?

Suffering Cha-ching

How sad is the ad fed to this New York Times article? The juxtaposition perfectly captures how a piece about ‘brisk’ Goodwill sales in a shaky economy gets framed for the comfort of the well‑off. Set against a luxury‑jewelry banner, the thrift racks and bargain hunters become scenery in a matter-of-fact business story, and the pairing all but turns both into poverty porn.

On January 7, 2026, ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis. Within hours, Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem constructed their lie. Trump claimed Good had “run over” or “tried to run over” the agent—framing the shooting as self-defense. Noem went further, branding Good a “domestic terrorist” who “weaponized her car” and “attempted to run [agents] over and ram them.”

Here’s Trump the next day, seated with New York Times reporters in a pre-scheduled interview, watching an aide hold up a laptop displaying the shooting footage. “Well,” he says, “I — the way I look at it…”

The performance is pure Trump: insisting, as the adage goes, that we believe him over our own eyes.

But the reporters had done their homework. The Times’s acclaimed Visual Investigations Team had analyzed the footage and determined the claims were spun out of thin air. (See the investigation here.)

The lie wasn’t just wrong—it was erasure. While accusing Good of weaponizing her SUV, Trump and Noem weaponized the narrative itself—turning her car from the vehicle of her death into evidence of her guilt.

The killing sparked immediate protest in Minneapolis. Demonstrators flooded the streets where ICE agents had killed Good, reclaiming the contested roadway. That’s where photojournalists went to work—not just documenting the clash, but revealing deeper patterns about vehicles, enforcement, and who operates with impunity on American streets.

Is there any chance that Trump saw the more graphic photograph of the Good’s car from the passenger side with the bloody airbag and the heart-wrenching view of the teddy bear peering out of the glove compartment?

Cars aren’t incidental to these killings—they’re central. They’re where civilians get trapped, where agents claim a threat, where rules of engagement collapse, where the kill shot happens. Photographers aren’t just recording what happened in Minneapolis. They’re interpreting a pattern: the vehicle as weapon, as trap, as contested space.

Reading the Swarm

At least a few dozen people have died in ICE custody or during ICE operations since Trump’s return, while an alarming subset of those fatalities involved vehicles. When ICE turns traffic stops and parking-lot encounters into battlefield raids, every car becomes a potential crime scene, exposing drivers and passengers to sudden lethal force and legal jeopardy.

The aerial view captures what Good experienced on the ground: a sudden swarm of ICE vehicles, no clear guidance, rules of engagement collapsing in real time. The following close-ups read the details of that swarm—the vehicles, the bodies, the small gestures that reveal who holds power and who faces the threat.

Look at what David Guttenfelder captures the day after Good’s killing: two youths, heads out the sunroof, juxtaposed with a platoon of agents. The car creates a barrier between them and the swarm—they’re elevated, protected, watching the enforcement machinery unfold. In this frozen moment, they could be riding in a tank, heads safely out the top, observing from a position of relative security.

And yet, Renee Good was in a vehicle the day before, and she’s dead. These two Black Americans—occupying a momentarily “privileged” observer position in a scene defined by racist enforcement—are one agent’s reaction away from the same fate.

Mostafa Bassim captures a man leaning against an unmarked CBP vehicle, arms outstretched, in a gesture that physically reclaims the enforcement apparatus. He’s making deliberate contact with the vehicle—the catalyst of state violence—reversing the power dynamic. The lean echoes Trump’s propaganda lie that Good rammed an ICE officer, but here, the behavior is controlled, visible, and intentional. His outstretched arms emphasize caution and communication.

There’s something almost superhero-like in the posture—a figure about to take flight—conveying the dignity, agency, and respect that should be automatic for all citizens in normal times. In the hangover from the slaughter, Bassim shows protesters turning what was a kill zone into a site of visible resistance.

Another Guttenfelder image puts the shoe on the other foot. A bright red service truck—vivid against the grey Minneapolis winter—sits center frame, its driver pressed against the hood by two agents who manhandle him despite full cooperation. In the foreground, a masked agent in combat gear looms with his weapon—the militarized presence that now defines American streets.

These photos put the Trump/Noem narrative to shame. The agents operate with roadway impunity. The double standard is stark: who gets designated a threat behind the wheel, who operates with street-level dominance, and who pays with their life.

On the 5th anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump’s insurrectionists, I would like to highlight a photo from that day that stands apart. Taken by documentary photographer Balazs Gardi, it was shortlisted for the 2025 Prix Pictet, one of the world’s leading awards for photography and sustainability.

Unlike most historical documentation that captures a moment and recedes into the archive, this image has proven disturbingly prescient—its significance not diminishing with time but intensifying, as if it foresaw the continuing political turbulence and democratic fragility—an oracle of our current despair.

Most January 6 imagery documents a harrowing attack that was ultimately repelled. Gardi’s photo frames the event differently. As a portrait rather than an action shot, it possesses an eerie quietness, an assuredness, even a solemnity that sets it apart. Where other photographs show pepper-spray clouds, hand-to-hand combat, shattered glass—this image presents something more unsettling: a moment of stillness that reads almost as an anointment.

At the center stands a figure dressed in Revolutionary War regalia, framed in a heroic pose that immediately evokes Emanuel Leutze’s “Washington Crossing the Delaware.” The composition is strikingly similar—a central figure in period costume, surrounded by compatriots, captured at what the image itself insists is a historic turning point. But where Leutze painted the founding of American democracy, Gardi has photographed what now appears to be the rehearsal for its unmaking. The revolutionary costume isn’t cosplay or irony—in this frame, it reads as a genuine claim, a declaration that this moment, this movement, represents the true inheritors of 1776.

Behind the figures looms the Capitol dome, shrouded in scaffolding. That scaffolding—meant for restoration and preservation—takes on devastating symbolic weight. The building appears wounded, vulnerable, literally under reconstruction. It’s as if the photograph captured the republic itself in a state of incompletion, its protective shell removed, exposed to those who would remake it in their own image.

The trappings are all there: the triumphant postures, the sense of historical inevitability, the quiet confidence of those who believe they’ve already won. And they may not have been wrong. While the government didn’t fall on January 6, 2021, the victory this photograph depicts is being realized. Trump was reelected. Congress, thus far, at least, has been neutralized. Constitutional constraints have been disregarded with impunity.

What seemed like a failed attempt may have been the turning point—and Gardi’s lens somehow knew it.

The Businessweek cover is nominally about the Tech/AI bubble, but it feels tuned to something broader—an exhaustion with hate, greed, and the corrosive buildup of Trump’s chaos.

These images point to a culture seeking relief.

Floral wallpaper—timeless and domestic—lies beneath a raw, urgent spray-paint script. Whimsy with an edge, it delivers a rebuke to narcissism and the cult of personality, with togetherness as the new order.

Another breakout in the works: youth culture staking its claim to physical space and embodied freedom. Unmediated, unmonetized, unalgorithmed, this image captures a generation pushing back against digital confinement, choosing dirt over dopamine loops.

In this campaign shot, Zohran punctures the bubble of exclusion and divisiveness with connection and joy. The photo is policy in action. It’s pluralism celebrated, not theorized, not demonized.

Resistance from power brokers to Zohran’s socialist agenda will be intense. Yet in the face of images like this, with what moral authority?

The old-timey vibe of the black-and-white evokes the very historical nostalgia Trump has weaponized—the Texas landscape, the stoic rancher, the mythology of rugged individualism. Yet this staunch conservative Republican has fully embraced wind power, an industry Trump is systematically destroying. The image says everything about the bubble: the popping sound is set up not by the denial of global heating or the dismantling of FEMA, but by soaring utility bills.

Trump’s machinery runs on separation—the threat of it, the spectacle of it, families visibly torn apart. This photo refuses that script. Kilmar was wrongfully deported; the system tried to erase him. And here he is, hand in hand with his wife, walking into daylight.

The tight frame makes the clasp everything. No crowd, no courthouse steps, no lawyers. Just the connection the cruelty tried to sever. That’s the bubble bursting. Not in rage but in love. In the simple, stubborn fact of people who refuse to be disappeared.

Photojournalists and illustrators have sustained us this year by making subterfuge visible. They’ve used irony not as cleverness but as clarity, showing us what we’re surrendering. In the case of this humanoid, it’s the dislocation of care from caring, health from healing, the body from touch. The laboratory setting frames caregiving as a technical problem rather than a relational act. And there you have Silicon Valley in a nutshell.

OH, What a Tangled Web we Weave.

As I’ve called out since the start of Trump’s second term, photojournalism has served as an editorial alarm system conveying the primal emotions and shocking realities of this man’s thrashing of democratic norms.

As the weeks have gone by, his provocations on the domestic front – pitting untrained, inexperienced National Guard members, along with other civil defense forces, against immigrants and concerned citizens – have grown more aggressive and widespread. The fact that two guard members were shot and killed in DC by a former Afghan CIA collaborator with an axe to grind was shocking but not surprising. The whole tragedy was completely avoidable.

At the scene, photographers could hardly help but focus on the metaphor: these guardsmen tangled in a web of police caution tape.

Chip Somodevilla’s image particularly challenges Trump’s strongman posturing. The soft pink of the planters combined with the yellow caution tape subverts the performative masculinity of deploying young troops to police American streets.

Something Had To Give

Escalating tensions and provocative deployments foreshadowed the violent eruption, captured in these particularly telling images.

On October 5, photographer Jim Vondruska made this photo at one of the daily protests outside the Broadview ICE facility in Illinois. Playing on the impunity of the martial law atmosphere—especially masked federal agents operating without accountability—the image lines up the tape to X out the officer’s face, inverting journalism’s protective redaction into an act of exposure. The juxtaposition conveys hostility and a sense of cancellation, the photo functioning as a conduit for public helplessness and rage.

On October 23rd, Noah Berger created this acerbic photo at a protest outside a Coast Guard base in California. The officers appear encased in an enormous bubble blown by a protester—a surreal commentary on these Orwellian times. The iridescent, rainbow-streaked membrane--not to mention the aiming of the hand--conjures the insulated fantasy world Trump and his minions occupy.

And we know what inevitably happens to bubbles.

Allison Shelley recorded these scenes on October 29 at the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro in Washington, where the absurd deployment of IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agents—typically tasked with financial crimes—had devolved into pulling people off buses for fare evasion. One photo shows a Black man sitting in handcuffs on a bench.

In another frame from the same action, an officer stands before a bus stop poster advertising a play about MLK and the planning of the 1963 March on Washington. His sidelong glance at King’s image, captured in the midst of this petty harassment, exposes the moral chasm between the civil rights movement and Trump’s hysterical martial law campaign.

Thirteen days later, Border Patrol agents preen and pose at The Bean in Chicago. The mirror surface catches them in their own reflection—ensnared by the very narcissism that underpins Trump’s obsession with dominance.

Undaunted by intimidation or propaganda, photographers reveal the deeper truths that words cannot. Their images are subtle now—hinting at fraying through the symbols of caution tape, bubbles, and mirrors. Yet they come as the web itself is already tearing, each frame another break.

The media calls it “immigration enforcement.” They describe “federal presence” in American cities. They report on White House “renovations.” This is the language of normalization—tepid, bureaucratic, designed to obscure what we’re actually witnessing: an occupation of select American cities by extrajudicial militias, domestic terrorism directed from the Oval Office, and the literal demolition of democratic institutions.

The following images refuse that sanitized language. They document what’s actually happening by showing us what it *looks like*—the visual signatures of fascism we’ve seen before in other places, other eras. These photographs activate our historical memory. They force recognition. Home Depot parking lots become killing grounds. A wrecking ball tears apart the People’s House via executive fiat. These images expose the truth that language fails.

Act I: The Occupation

Perfect angle.

Photographer Ashlee Rezin lined up the marching federal agents with Chicago’s Trump Tower looming behind them—the gilded monument to one man’s ego now serving as the backdrop for his commandos moving through American streets. The composition makes the connection explicit: these aren’t law enforcement officers serving the public; they’re his forces, deployed to terrorize hand-picked cities into submission.

The agents move with the ragtag quality of a militia—mismatched headgear, irregular formation, but unified in purpose. The street-level perspective puts us in the position of the occupiers, watching them approach. We’ve seen this visual grammar before as paramilitaries barrel through urban corridors.

It’s not the first time Chicago has seen federal forces in its streets. But this time, there’s no convention to disperse. This is occupation as policy.

Body pinned to pavement, uniforms looming over, tear gas hanging in the air—this photo circulated widely because it crystallizes the pattern. Trump deploys force sporadically and unpredictably, which is key to the terror. But this image captures the whole repressive stance in a single frame.

There’s a reason the photo grabbed me the way John Filo’s Kent State massacre photo did. That image stood for everyone who was assaulted and killed during the Vietnam War protests. This one works the same way: every protester pinned an iteration, each waft of spray a token of Tear Gas Nation.

For decades, the processing center sat tucked in an industrial park in Broadview—most residents didn’t even know it existed until Trump repurposed it as ICE’s “primary processing location” for his enforcement surge. This suburb of 8,000 people now has state police, county sheriffs, and federal agents enforcing curfews, deploying tear gas and rubber bullets—”making war on my community,” as the mayor put it.

The nightsticks form their own architecture—echoing the peaked roofs behind them, creating a window frame of batons that traps the woman protester, screaming off-center. The symbolism is literally torturous: law enforcement tearing apart the very geometry of civil protection, the devil’s triangle swallowing up democratic space.

Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez came to a Home Depot parking lot looking for work, just as ICE came hunting. His makeshift memorial marks the spot where he stood that morning—flowers and crosses gathered where day laborers meet at dawn. This is America’s latest war memorial: big-box home improvement stores transformed into killing fields—our Immigrant Arlington.

On the Home Depot asphalt, America’s tacit imported labor collides head-on with Trump’s vicious jingoism. The ubiquitous logo looms over candles and crosses—corporate and indifferent. The brand now equates with their grief. Hard hats and safety vests, meant for building, become icons of loss. The store remains open. The work continues. So we memorialize at raid sites now.

Act II: The Normalization

Capitol photographers live for the frenzy—members rushing to votes, staff zipping down corridors, the constant pulse of governance. This image captures the opposite: abandonment, stillness, democracy made inoperative. The government shut down on October 1 after Trump and congressional allies refused to negotiate a funding deal.

DOGE wasn’t just a meme—it was the blueprint.

Four years ago, Paul Ratje’s photograph of Border Patrol agents on horseback chasing Haitian migrants through the Rio Grande sparked national outrage. The image was everywhere—agents wielding reins like whips, migrants ducking in terror.

The evolution involves a $15 million sponsorship deal that turns the Border Patrol into an entertainment brand. Pickup men wear Border Patrol chaps. Riders wear “Protected by Border Patrol” jerseys. Agents rappel from arena rafters to standing ovations. Competitors go on “ride-alongs” with agents, participate in apprehending migrants, and post Instagram videos bragging about it. One said chasing immigrants was a greater adrenaline rush than riding a bull.

As immigration enforcement morphs into family entertainment, fascism takes a bow.

Act III: The Demolition

When I saw the gutted facade eclipsing Old Glory in the East Wing demolition photos, 9/11 came to mind. Both images arrest us with their flags and ruptured architecture— the visual similarity only sharpening the difference.

The Pentagon burned from an attack the country had no choice but to endure. Its scar became a national cause—a promise to resist and rebuild. Now, as the White House is gutted by executive order—with no congressional approval, no heed for preservationists, all for a private ballroom—we’re told it’s just “renovation.” Both images reveal iconic American institutions torn apart, each arrayed with flags bearing silent witness. But the Pentagon image memorializes what was done to us; the White House documents what Trump is doing to us. That’s not metaphor—it’s the stark distinction between terrorism and fascism.

Alex Kent’s photograph drives that reality home in more impressionistic terms. The flag hangs close to twisted metal, enlarged but obscured, backgrounded by darkness and debris. Smoke drifts through—from demolition or something more ominous, it’s unclear. There’s a second flag in the distance, smaller, receding through haze. One version of America endures but grows harder to visualize.

The People’s House is a war zone.

Chatting the Pictures: Trump Must Be High

Before the wrecking ball came the gloating. Developer inspecting property. Strongman surveying domain. One man literally on top of American democracy.

This is the visual thesis made flesh: not a president governing, but an autocrat claiming ownership. The $200 million ballroom project—90,000 square feet that would replace the entire East Wing—isn’t renovation, it’s annexation. And Trump wants you to see him doing it, wants the photographs of him towering over the institutions, the press, the people. His brand of fascism doesn’t hide; it peacocks.

On September 10th, a gunman assassinated Charlie Kirk. By afternoon, the same news cycle that had consumed hours dissecting his death barely paused when gunfire erupted at Evergreen High School. One death commanded the spotlight; the others faded into the now-routine category of school shooting. The disparity revealed something stark: which lives get seen, which violence gets named, depends entirely on who’s watching and what they’re allowed to see.

This context defines the images collected here. They are not just records—they are acts of witness in a society where threats, censorship, and reprisal have become routine. After Kirk’s death, the apparatus of suppression accelerated. Individuals were silenced. Newsrooms toed the line. The images that follow document what happens when traditional channels of dissent close down: visual defiance steps into the void. Unlike voices that can be threatened off the air or pressured into false balance, these images speak through bodies, walls, and blank spaces—testimony that persists when words become too dangerous.

I. Bodies as Battlegrounds

Badges and Badges

Photographer Sinna Nasseri captured this photo at Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA conference in Tampa in July. The subject: a young woman in immigration detention, photographed from behind at an event celebrating the very enforcement policies that detained her. Only the back of her head is visible.

She’s literally sticking her neck out—the most vulnerable target bearing the most defiant message: “FUCK YOU, I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME. When speech brings consequences, the neck becomes both a billboard and a bull’s-eye. Rage Against the Machine’s lyrics are etched into the flesh, leaving the body as a permanent testament.

Punishing Policy, Viral Remix

A protester detained for a sandwich toss—absurdity and overreaction in perfect balance. The arrest crystallizes how minor resistance draws major response, turning lunch into civil disobedience.

Then the image becomes local legend—comic, angry, persistent. When arrest photos become street art, the state’s attempt at intimidation backfires into folk heroism.

II. Institutional Suppression

Fire Away

RFK arrived at his latest Senate hearing itching for war—not just to pay lip service, but to deliver a full assault on the institutions meant to protect public health.

Photographer Andrew Harnik’s response couldn’t have been more insightful: he shoots Kennedy’s hostile Senate performance not by centering on Kennedy himself, but by foregrounding the wall of photographers documenting him. In a stroke of novelty, he captures his fellow photographers as RFK’s proxies—their cameras, one like a shoulder-fired weapon, flipped in the direction of scientific institutions, the process of congressional oversight, and every one of us.

Here sits a man who trafficked in vaccine conspiracy theories, now positioned to gut the agencies that stand between Americans and the next pandemic. The photographic arsenal mirrors the real one: Kennedy wielding his platform to demolish decades of scientific consensus, while the photo frames democracy’s immune system failing in real time.

Muscle Bound

He stands alone but owns all the space—waiting outside asylum hearings to haul the next immigrant into detention. Trump’s agenda has made intimidation policy: the Pentagon was renamed the “Department of War,” and enforcement agencies have been flooded with funds. His head an afterthought, the agent’s bulk dwarfs everything else—making sheer muscle the signature of governance.

Fish Out of Water

Trump’s war on majority-Black cities plays out in miniature here: red state troops sent to intimidate blue city residents and purge immigrants. While the media amplifies Trump’s rhetoric about “dangerous” urban areas as “training grounds,” they miss the Civil War echoes.

Not so with this subtle but clever photo by Reuters photographer Jose Luis Gonzalez, who captures mostly white South Carolina guardsmen wedged into a DC subway car, looking like fish out of water. They cluster like a human choke point, turning everyday transit into a reminder of federal overreach. Their tan uniforms, accidentally camouflaged against the beige interior, add an absurd visual irony—they blend into the décor even as they stick out politically.

Lost in a Daze

Motion blur tells two stories. In Portland, federal agents surge toward protesters—bodies transformed into an advancing wall, the state bearing down with overwhelming force.

In Spain, citizens rush toward a wildfire with garden hoses, desperately improvising what should be a coordinated response. The same visual language—motion, urgency, chaos—but one captures massive federal resources deployed against protesters who pose no threat. At the same time, the other shows ordinary people left to fight a real catastrophe alone.

Morning Shockwaves, Afternoon Silence

September 10, 2025. Panic settles over the crowd, phones are out, and kids are holding each other. You might expect this to be coverage of Charlie Kirk’s assassination—the composition has that weight, the shock, the choreography of American tragedy. But this isn’t the Kirk shooting. It’s Evergreen High, hours later. Some violence commands spotlights; other violence fades almost unseen, though the tears run the same.

III. Media and Artistic Resistance

War on Free Speech, Public Art

Banksy’s new mural appears outside the Royal Courts of Justice—a judge in wigs and robes beating a protester bloody. Hours after authorities labeled Palestine Action as terrorists, here’s justice reimagined as a weapon. Then comes the cover-up. Guards block the mural, making the absence the loudest statement of all. What’s on display now isn’t just the crackdown on protest, but anxiety about what an image might ignite. The void left behind shouts as loud as the art.

When Atrocities Go Unnamed

This Objektiv cover was Tomato Košir’s radical answer to the unprecedented slaughter of journalists in Gaza (over 220 killed since Israel’s war began). Where publications signal grief with black covers, Košir wanted something angrier—a page punctured like the bodies of reporters on the ground.

No Photo

NO-PHOTO 2025, a guerrilla intervention at the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, pasted black squares with photo credits throughout the city. Each displayed a text description.

The project inserted the decimation of Gaza into the festival and commented on its absence. Yet in that absence, an exquisite visual language calls forth the unseen. In the vacuum, the mind’s eye rushes in: detail sharpened, meaning unfiltered by habit or fatigue. These blank spaces allow narrative and testimony to bypass our familiar perceptual filters, making the unseen vividly present—arguably even more powerfully than any raw image could.

Remote Control

Blitt’s “Remote Control” dares to shout what most journalism won’t: after Kirk’s assassination, the crackdown didn’t stop at newsrooms—it came for entertainment too. Kimmel gets the hook. Newsrooms capitulate. The remote becomes the perfect metaphor for consolidated control—click, and voices disappear; click, and dissent gets silenced across every channel.

The drawing succeeds where journalism fails because it operates in a more transitory space. While media companies fold and comedians get silenced, most satire slips through the cracks, saying what everyone knows but no one left on television can afford to broadcast.

IV. The Crisis of Seeing

Each image in this collection calls out a breakdown in perception—observation without comprehension, coverage without context. That breakdown reaches its endpoint in tourists at the Grand Canyon, phones raised, framing catastrophe as backdrop.

Each one insists: pay attention, notice what they’re hiding, refuse the official story. Because once we stop paying attention—once we accept the official frame, the selective spotlight, the fenced walls and erased comedians—that’s when the silence becomes permanent.

Fellow Citizens in Hiding

Amid ICE raids in Los Angeles that detained over 1,600 people in just 16 days, Brandon Tauszik’s photographs illuminate the profound human cost of sanctioned oppression. While media coverage spotlights dramatic scenes at meatpacking plants and big-box retailers, Tauszik’s lens shifts to the “invisible” middle class—immigrants fully integrated into daily American life, whose quiet routines are thrown into stark relief by the climate of fear. Ana spends time in her bedroom, Maria sorts photo negatives, and Bob practices his bass guitar: simple acts of belonging made suddenly precarious.

Through these intimate domestic moments, his work confronts the rhetoric that frames immigrants as alien or “illegal,” exposing a campaign that undermines equality and lawful protection. Each photograph dignifies those forced into hiding and affirms their place in the American fabric.

The Apparatus of Legal Entrapment

At 26 Federal Plaza, the Trump administration has transmuted the immigration court into a trap, where simply showing up for a legal hearing becomes grounds for immediate arrest. Because the administration does not attempt to hide this shocking abuse, the blocking of the camera speaks more to brazen contempt for oversight than the need for secrecy.

The Architecture of Anonymity

Federal agents have adopted the visual language of organized crime—masked faces, concealed identities, unmarked vehicles. But more than functional anonymity, the mask has become both the signature and fashion of the authoritarian state, a symbol and tool of Trumpian thuggery. As much as the disguise has become a chilling signature, Carol Guzy’s close-up rightly casts the cover as a second skin.

Guzy's hallway portrait reveals the whole aesthetic. Here, MAGA red infiltrates the camouflage color wheel—military olive meets basketball streetwear and dark glasses in a deliberate fashion statement of fascist commercialism. The composition's stark contrast between the eerie, surveillance-like reflection of the courthouse hallway and the clean void of a background transforms the masked figure into a floating symbol of federal force, suspended in limbo.

By erasing their faces, agents maximize both intimidation and legal protection, aligning federal law enforcement with the visual tropes of horror films and authoritarian death squads.

Olga Fedorova’s image reveals the whole fetishistic dimension of this visual theater. That the blood-red mask anchors the frame is no accident. The color contrast, the theatrical positioning, and the way it dominates the composition. At the same time, other agents fade into supporting roles—but here we see something more: the red mask functions as both an alpha identifier and a gang color, signifying ultimate allegiance to the MAGA brotherhood.

Lives Shattered in Real Time

Guzy's photograph captures the courthouse trap: a woman leaving her hearing with a smile, still clutching her legal papers, unaware that compliance with the legal system has made her a target. The transformation of her expression from hope to confusion to horror, captured in real time, exposes the cruel efficiency of the government's bait-and-switch.

In this sequence by Steffi Keith, a man takes off his wedding ring to give to his partner before a federal agent detains him. She ends up leaving without him.

In this heartbreaking photo, the geometry of the building—cold marble, strict verticals—underscores the impersonal machinery of the institutions at hand. To the right, a woman and her children weep after agents detained her husband following his immigration hearing at the Jacob Javits Federal Building. To the left stands a building security guard, moved to tears by what he's witnessing. Yet, even as his body language betrays empathy, his uniform and his weapon mark the distance between his role and theirs. He is a sentinel of another authority, a witness and not an actor, present but powerless to intervene.

But what happens when someone tries to intervene in this organized ruthlessness? The courthouse machinery has an answer for that, too.

The arrest of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander reveals the administration's willingness to escalate violence against any form of resistance. The image captures the ragdoll treatment of elected officials who refuse to bend the knee—a warning that no level of political authority provides sanctuary from enforcement operations.

Even family members are subject to similar treatment. In this scene, federal agents scuffle with a Paraguayan woman after the detention of her relative—raw footage of the family separation cruelty that defined Trump's first term

The Archive of American Cruelty

What emerges from this visual documentation is a comprehensive account: a sweeping portrayal of official brutality operating at every level of society. The photographers have captured the human cost with devastating intimacy. Thugs hiding behind masks have become the face of American authoritarianism, not just harassing, but wrecking the lives of family members and fellow citizens.

The problem is that these times defy bearing witness. These images force the question of whether we can move from paralysis to action, from evidence to accountability.

The Great Erasure

Climate disasters are multiplying, intensifying, and breaking records. What's vanishing is our ability to see them as evidence. This photo of tourists in Greece watching flames engulf the nearby hills is a metaphor for our age.

Half a year into Trump's second term, the administration has perfected strategic blindness—systematically dismantling the historic climate measures Biden put in place while disappearing our tools to track its rampant acceleration. Federal climate websites scrubbed clean. NOAA gutted. EPA programs eliminated. FEMA is threatened with extinction. This chosen ignorance all but guarantees that we'll blow past the key climate tipping points, making containment impossible.

The Disasters You Haven't Seen

Was the deluge in the Texas Hill Country a one-off disaster?

Before Kerr County made headlines this summer, 2025 had already delivered a relentless barrage of catastrophic flooding across the United States. In February, a historic torrent swept through Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia, killing 18 and causing over $2 billion in damages—the deadliest and costliest flood in the region's history. May saw atmospheric rivers inundate the Mid-Atlantic, pushing the Potomac River to its highest stage in decades.

What follows is a sample of recent climate catastrophes that have received little coverage despite their scale. These are just the latest in an escalating series that includes last fall's Hurricane Helene and Milton one-two punch, January's LA firestorms, and this summer's return of Canadian wildfire smoke choking U.S. cities. People don’t hide these disasters—they systematically ignore them and treat them as freak events rather than as evidence of an alarming pattern.

As 1.8 trillion gallons of water—four months' worth of rainfall supercharged by climate change—fell in hours, Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian institution hosting the daughters of Texas political elites, became a death trap. The flood killed twenty-seven children and counselors, while rescuers evacuated the surviving campers as they sang hymns.

Officials deflected blame onto the very emergency agencies Trump had gutted. The White House accused critics of spreading "falsehoods" about warning systems. At the same time, Texas leaders insisted "nobody saw this coming"—despite climate scientists warning for years that intensifying rainfall would make flash floods deadlier.

Faith, Flags, and Blinders

Nowhere is the dismissal of global heating more apparent than in Trump country, where escalating disasters are viewed as acts of God rather than predictable consequences.

The Irony of Loyalty

Praying Away the Crisis

This Kerr County prayer circle, formed in the aftermath of the Texas floods, reveals the conflation of faith and nationalism. In communities where devotion to God and country merge into one, divine providence is seen as the explanation for the devastation, while federal agencies become suspect as enemies.

Martyrdom vs. Real Victim

A car hood painted with Trump's assassination attempt photo sits in flood-devastated Kerr County like a shrine to manufactured martyrdom. While Trump turned it into campaign gold, his followers live with the real consequences of his reality distortion. A search-and-rescue volunteer found this Camp Mystic T-shirt along the Guadalupe River. "I hope I find the person to return their belongings, not to find closure," he told a reporter. That hope captures what we've lost to strategic ignorance: the chance to prevent rather than merely recover.

The children of Texas drowned not because the climate crisis was invisible, but because whole political and industrial systems depend on not seeing it. This is the only published photograph I've found that shows what America's worst measles outbreak in years actually looks like: three children—Garner, Arden, and Tucker—in a hospital room in Lubbock, Texas. Not taken by a professional photojournalist embedded with a major news organization. Not part of a media surge to expose a contagion. Shot by their mother, Carrollyn Timmons, whose world had just collapsed.

One image. In an outbreak that has already sickened over 1300 people nationwide (approximately 92% unvaccinated), with 88% of those cases in Texas alone.

While these children struggled to breathe, while their parents watched preventable disease ravage their family, America's media has mostly served up the most benign or generic imagery: stock vaccine photos, syringes, speckled arms, and measles molecules.

And, if I see it one more time, I think I'm going to scream—that makeshift plywood sign in Seminole, Texas, with stenciled lettering reading "Measles Testing."

When Belief Meets Reality

The Timmons family story reads like a parable about the cost of vaccine skepticism. Kiley Timmons, a chiropractor who had treated his rural Brownfield community with alternative medicine for over a decade, believed measles mainly was a mild "rites-of-passage" illness—the nostalgic childhood disease from old TV shows.

Then reality arrived with devastating precision. Four of their children ended up hospitalized. Kiley himself suffered dangerous oxygen drops and severe rashes requiring intensive care. The four children developed high fevers, pneumonia, and respiratory distress. Even after discharge, they faced lingering effects: cluster headaches, eye sores, recurring infections from measles-induced "immune amnesia."

"I feel like I've been lied to," Kiley told the New York Times.

But where are the images documenting the newly stricken? Where is the imagery that might make other parents reconsider their choices? We have one—shot by a desperate mother in a hospital room, probably with her phone.

Grief as Photo Op

While media outlets recycled the same plywood sign, one man understood the power of being photographed at ground zero: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary and vaccine conspiracy theorist.

Kennedy traveled to Seminole in April to attend 8-year-old Daisy Hildebrand's funeral—the second child to die in this outbreak. His social media post afterward was a masterpiece of calculated sympathy: "It was a heartbreaking day, but I felt so much warmth and love from the entire Mennonite community."

The visit yielded exactly the imagery Kennedy needed: an anti-vaccine politician transformed into a compassionate healer, posed with grieving families and local doctors. Never mind that Kennedy had spent years undermining confidence in the very vaccines that could have prevented these deaths. In the carefully choreographed theater of his visit, he was recast as a witness to tragedy, not its architect.

Even Daisy's father, Peter Hildebrand—whose daughter had just died from measles—remained unmoved. "The [MMR] vaccine ain't worth a damn," he told The Mail, despite the CDC confirming his daughter's death was caused by the virus. Of Kennedy's visit: "He didn't mention vaccines once. But he was the nicest man I ever met."

The photographs tell their own story: Kennedy, somber and sympathetic, is enveloped by families whose trust in his anti-vax rhetoric has cost them a child.

The Pictures We Need

Covering disease outbreaks has never been easy. Patient privacy, access restrictions, and the challenge of depicting invisible pathogens—these are real constraints that complicate visual journalism. But what we're witnessing goes beyond logistical hurdles to something more troubling: a retreat from the kind of bold, connective visual storytelling that public health crises demand.

The media's current approach—stock photos of vaccinations, that ubiquitous plywood sign—reflects a broader hesitancy to engage with the political dimensions of this outbreak. Meanwhile, the captains of vaccine skepticism understand image-making perfectly. Kennedy's Seminole photo op was a clinic in visual messaging: transforming from vaccine opponent to grieving witness.

It wasn't always the case. During the 1962-1965 measles epidemic, LIFE Magazine didn't shy from making the stakes visceral and immediate, publishing this cover of a pregnant woman confronting readers with her powerful look of trust.

Today's media needs to reclaim that stance. This means more than just documenting victims and treatments—though we fiercely need more of both. It means visually connecting disease outbreaks to their political catalysts: the anti-vaccine propaganda, the anti-science disinformation campaigns, the systematic destruction of public health infrastructure. And it means showcasing the perpetrators' intent, as we see in this image taken while Kennedy was persistently obfuscating and lying to a Senate health committee.

The current outbreak is growing, not shrinking. Rather than being intimidated by far-right attacks on scientific institutions, media organizations should be expanding their visual creativity not just to note, but to banner the existential threat to the public health ecosystem—from hospital ICUs to congressional hearings, from grieving families to the activists fighting to prevent more loss and affliction.

One mother's hospital photos shouldn't carry the entire weight of documenting this crisis. Carrollyn Timmons' image stands alone not because the story is rare, but because it’s not being vigorously pursued or contextualized. The measles shot we need to see isn't the vaccine going into arms so much as the aftermath of refusing it—and the political forces that made that refusal possible.

It's a stunning photo of federal agents descending on LA's MacArthur Park. It's got hints of the landing on Omaha Beach crossed with Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The performance, which included 90 armed troops and 17 military Humvees, displaced a summer day camp. Of course, the media knew to be there.

Mayor Karen Bass’s face is a study in helplessness and disgust—a direct appeal to us, the viewers, as she breaks the fourth wall. The moment's gendered theatrics are also unmistakable in the agent's obliviousness to the mayor's presence, his cowboy hat, and shouted commands.

Terror at the Court

Before Trump's shock campaign, the idea of migrants being apprehended at immigration courts was unimaginable—an abhorrent bait-and-switch as refugees appear for their hearing, trusting in the protection of due process. Today, Steffi Keith’s photograph, captured in the hallways of Federal Immigration Court in Manhattan, does more than document: it crystallizes the energy of the dragnet into a single, arresting frame. The picture is even more telltale as Democratic senators have introduced legislation to ban ICE agents from hiding their identities.

The Mass Detention Camps

It’s the darkest photo from Trump’s visit to the new migrant detention center at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Facility in the Florida Everglades. And I refuse to call it by its promotional name.

This shot, mirroring White House photos, reveals the detention policy as agitprop. The camp, now teeming with desperate detainees, is already infamous for its squalor: reports of maggot-laced food, filthy quarters, and water shortages spill out, even as lawmakers are barred from entering.

The press (penned in too!) become unwilling extras—captive chroniclers forced to amplify the state’s narrative. The whole performance is a show of dominance, red meat for the faithful who can also collect prison-themed merch. All of it is barely protected from the oppressive Everglades, where cruelty is both the message and the medium.

A LOOK BACK: TPS and Haitians Endangered En Masse

Remember the vicious Haitian slander ("they're eating our cats") propagated by Vance and Trump during the campaign? We pictured these refugees in our post last year on the Haitians of Springfield.

What is their status now?

In late June 2025, DHS announced plans to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, with protections and work permits set to expire in early September. A federal judge blocked the early termination, and the government is appealing. This affects over half a million Haitians, many of whom could face deportation to their broken homeland.

Flooding Disaster: Too Little, Too Late

I’ll be posting a newsletter on the horrific flooding and tragic loss of life in Kerr, Texas. In the meantime, consider Loren Elliott’s photograph, which the Times chose to lead Trump’s visit to the region. The image, with its quietly masterful composition, stands as a counterpoint to Trump’s typical empathy-deficient, self-promotional display. It's sense of distance and near-casual detachment subtly highlights Trump’s remove and the emptiness of his gestures, especially as he’s been actively dismantling the nation’s disaster relief infrastructure.

As Trump and his team deflect and distract, the magnitude of this catastrophe—and the administration’s bungled response, with the potential to rival George Bush’s Katrina debacle—invites a torrent of metaphors. In this moment, Trump is not merely out of his depth; he’s a diminished presence at the water’s edge, eclipsed by the scale of the disaster and the peril of a climate crisis he refuses to acknowledge.

Pride and Joy

Uncertainty and anxiety marked Pride Month and its many parades across the country. Out of the countless photos I saw, I’m sharing this one by Julia Nikhinson because it captures a rare moment of culture war calm.

Amid the swirl of vibrant color and movement—rainbow tutus, fishnet stockings, and the press of the crowd—there’s a quiet center. The contrast between the festive energy and the person sitting and smiling at us, arms resting on the rail, radiates stillness and resilience. It’s a reminder of the strength it takes to claim peace in turbulent times.

No Kings

There have been countless protests lately, each producing its share of striking images. Among them, Robin Fader's work stands out—her black-and-white photography for No Kings Day, captured on assignment for the BBC and Washington City Paper, reveals a sharp instinct for the political meta. With every demonstration, she manages to distill the larger narrative into a single, evocative frame.

The candor makes this pic "meme-ready."

The Face of Justice

Anita Kunz’s “The Face of Justice” landed quietly amid the chaos that followed the Trump assassination attempt and the opening of the Republican Convention. Still, its resonance has only sharpened as the Supreme Court’s term ends. The illustration is more than a clever visual pun—it’s an indictment and a mirror held up to the nation at a moment of profound constitutional crisis.

Rather than serving as a neutral arbiter, the Court has openly freelanced on the law, bending precedent and constitutional principle to fit the demands of a radical agenda. The image—save their hands, six clones—lays bare the reality: the judiciary, once a bulwark against executive overreach, has been captured and remade in the image of Trump and the architects of Project 2025.

Hispanic America’s 9/11

Missing posters like this one, now appearing across Los Angeles, are a haunting echo of the flyers that blanketed New York City after 9/11. Both serve as desperate calls for answers and as public memorials to those who have suddenly vanished. For many in Hispanic America, the scale of loss and fear today recalls that earlier moment of collective trauma— of safety shattered overnight.

Meeting force with flowers. The image carries obvious echoes—Washington, 1967, when protesters placed carnations in rifle barrels outside the Pentagon. But this flower, anchoring an oncoming squad of LAPD riot cops, tells a more complex story about how peaceful resistance gets weaponized into justification for escalation.

The media coverage of LA's immigration protests has suffered from a fundamental visual bias: it’s been heavily skewed toward violence when the overwhelming public response has been adamantly peaceful. The standoffs that do occur? They're mostly the result of aggressive deployments by local, state, and federal forces—intimidation tactics designed to provoke the very conflicts that justify further crackdowns.

Consider the geography: the actual protest area is tiny, just a few blocks in downtown LA. This minimal footprint exposes the "theater of engagement" for what it is—a stage where Trump needs violence to justify crackdowns and generate sensationally biased imagery for his base.

That's the appeal of Benjamin Dreyer's BlueSky updates from LA. So much blue sky. So little fire.

Jay L. Clendenin's photo captures this perfectly: militarized police in full battle mode while the street appears empty of protesters, photographers documenting the spectacle. It's media critique in a single frame, complete with a "there's your problem" directional arrow.

But plenty of photographers are capturing a different story—one that challenges both the administration's violent narrative and the media's complicity in amplifying it. These are the pictures that tell a different story.

Flowers As Meta

The flower motif appeared again and again in that June 9-11 window, not as a coincidence, but as a visual insistence. Mike Blake's composition captures delicate blooms scattered at the feet of a soldier in full tactical gear. But there's something deeper here than simple peace symbolism. These flowers reframe the entire tableau, transforming "protesters vs. troops" into something more complex: community members offering grace to soldiers caught up in a cynical gambit.

And that's what emerges when you look more closely at the individual faces behind the riot gear.

The Compromise Of Law Enforcement

When you look past the photos of sporadic clashes and stereotypical us-vs-them imagery, you'll find a surprising number of portraits that expose the uncertainty of officers and soldiers stationed against their own communities. This Clendenin shot captures that perfectly—the soldier's expression suggests someone caught between duty and conscience.

The gaze in this photo by Sinna Nasseri is even more curious. Notice what draws the soldier's attention: the figure of the resident in "local uniform," the LA team logo and sports jersey, the everyday markers of local identity. This symbolism makes the officer in blue and his neon riot gear even more of an outlier—foreign elements imposed on familiar ground.

But the personal compromise goes beyond moral conflict. In some cases, the treatment represents outright negligence.

Photos obtained by The San Francisco Chronicle document the reality of Trump's show of force: National Guard troops packed in federal building basements, initially dispensed with "no federal funding available for food, water, fuel or lodging." These aren't warriors—they're casualties of Trump's manufactured crisis, assigned without adequate support for a mission that serves no legitimate security purpose.

The Heart Of Los Angeles—Culture And The Arts

The most radical act in these protests may be the simplest. While Trump's orchestration demands conflict, LA's streets have become stages for something far more subversive—the celebration of local culture.

Take the moral panic over Mexican flags at the protests. The outrage reveals a willful ignorance about what Los Angeles actually is: a megalopolis where Latinos, at 47%, comprise the largest ethnic group by far, Spanish is spoken in over a third of households, and English is not the city’s majority language.

When protesters wave Mexican flags, they're not claiming foreign territory—they're asserting their place in a city that has always been theirs. The photo reflects the amalgam: the flag is Mexican, the fingers spell LA.

This is what gets lost in the media's obsession with conflict imagery: the joy. Day after day, these protests have featured traditional dancing, music, celebration—expressions of heritage that refuse to be harassed into invisibility. This shot captures women in traditional dress dancing in front of City Hall while police are relegated to the far background.

But perhaps the most perfect visual commentary comes courtesy of artist Barbara Kruger. Jay L. Clendenin's composition captures National Guard troops positioned directly in front of Kruger's installation at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, just blocks from the Federal Building. The soldiers become unwitting performers in Kruger's ongoing interrogation of American power, first displayed in 2018:

WHO IS BEYOND THE LAW? WHO IS BOUGHT AND SOLD? WHO DOES THE TIME? WHO SALUTES LONGEST? WHO DIES FIRST? WHO LAUGHS LAST?

Kruger's questions frame these soldiers and Trump's political spectacle with devastating precision.

Love, Faith, And Solidarity

In the face of Trump's calculated cruelty, faith communities have responded with radical scripture. This Bible transforms a personal devotional into public testimony. This isn't prosperity gospel or culture war Christianity—it's the subversive tradition that turns religious texts into resistance documents.

Gabriela Bhaskar's composition captures individual witness scaled to collective solidarity as community members stand their ground.

And then comes the ultimate test: religious leaders choosing to stand with their communities in the face of state power. This image, captured just before mass arrests swept the area, shows faith leaders joining the broader resistance, choosing solidarity over safety. In Trump's America, apparently loving your neighbor has become a criminal act.

Salutary Satire

The unintentional comedy of the dancing bubbles perfectly subverts the underlying truth behind this political charade, exposing the absurdity beneath all the tactical gear.

And here we return to that persistent sunflower—the same symbol of peaceful resistance we saw scattered at soldiers' feet. But now the flower serves a different purpose: visual punchline. The photographer's commitment to capturing this single bloom against military boots becomes almost slapstick.

Eric Thayer's photograph delivers the ultimate joke: an officer lost in the weeds. The basic struggle with navigation in an urban landscape embodies Trump's immigration strategy in miniature: overwrought, under-planned, and ultimately self-defeating.

An American Story

For a completely different and more organic view of who belongs and who doesn't, I've included these Instagram photos and this statement from photographer Jordan Gale, taken over those three days.

My grandfather immigrated to the Midwest from Mexico as an infant with his family. He served in the U.S. military during World War II and continually sought to assimilate into American identity. I never heard Spanish spoken in my grandparents’ home, and throughout my life he openly adopted the politics of the Republican Party. Coming to Los Angeles this week and witnessing the protests of a vibrant and proud culture—one I have long wished to feel closer to—has been profound. The response from Los Angeles, particularly the Latino community, is now at the epicenter of America’s push against President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts. The culture he avidly pursues is not only influencing the nation at large, but it is also deeply ingrained in today’s American identity. One cannot simply deny that.

Here's the impossible calculus of resistance in Trump's America: a protester holding a sign declaring absolute confidence in keeping the peace, shrouded in a swirl of tear gas.

The image captures the fundamental contradiction of nonviolent resistance when your opponent's entire strategy depends on provoking violence. It's a document of moral courage under impossible circumstances—and a stark reminder that when democracy fails, the people become its last defenders.
